Day 11 - Olduvai and Ngorongoro Safari

Today, with our homestay partners, we went on safari!  We visited the Leakey Living Museum, where we learned about archeologists Mary and Louis, who researched about the first humans in Tanzania. We saw the Leakey’s living quarters and got an idea of how they were able to live and research in the Serengheti in Tanzania. They had a water tank, a windmill for energy, a place where they stored their findings, a kitchen, rooms, and more. Next we visited the Olduvai Gorge Museum. There we learned about the fossilized findings, dating back to Lucy, 3.5 million years ago. The Gorge also had fossil remains of later human ancestors: Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, and Homo sapiens, all within a small area of the Gorge. The museum and our guide explained the evolution of humans and how Homo Erectus and early Homo Sapiens lived. The view was very beautiful as we saw the dried version of two rivers that connect and reach the Red Sea. We also celebrated Audrey’s birthday at the Gorge, where she opened her letters, and we all enjoyed a tasty cake. She was very happy to read her cards. Lastly we visited the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority where we saw many ancient bones and animals. In the Ngorongoro Crater many Masai people live along with their cattle. Driving through the conservation area, we saw many Masai people (adults and children) herding their cattle. Most of us saw the “Big 5”- a lion who was right on the road, a leopard chilling in a tree, buffalos in a herd, an elephant munching on greens, and a rhino who was relaxing in the sun. We also saw animals like flamingo, giraffes, antelope, gazelles, warthogs, and wildebeast. Before we left we saw baboons at the gate who were very friendly. The animals were definitely a big highlight for us!  Thanks for reading the blog.
